At its core, ‘Aangan’, which translates to courtyard in English, is a passionate venture, but one that is also realistic and responsible in its approach. It seeks to look into how climate-friendly construction practices can help reduce heat-related problems; particularly amongst disadvantaged communities across Mumbai. The aim is to begin by directly engaging with residents and surveying them to better understand the personal/specific challenges they face related to indoor heat, ventilation, housing materials, and overall thermal comfort. These insights will help identify both the barriers and opportunities associated with improving living conditions through climate-responsive design.
Building on this understanding, Aangan hopes to create a series of interconnected interventions. These will include a podcast series featuring architects, engineers, and sustainability experts, a fundraising campaign supporting cooling-focused housing improvements, and a research-based white paper examining our findings and providing recommendations to building businesses, policy makers and any interested individuals for the future. Through all of this, Aangan aims to make sustainable construction, a louder conversation as well as a solution that reaches the people that stand to benefit from it most.
